### Description The New Jersey flag is a vast expanse of buff that contains the state s coat of arms In the center. Above the shield is a helmet that is facing forward, and above the helmet is a horse's head. The shield has three plows on it. There are two women on either side of the coat of arms, one wearing a yellow top with a blue skirt and holding a long staff which supports a cap. The other woman is wearing a red top and blue skirt while holding a cornucopia that is overflowing with food. A ribbon at the bottom of the shield envelops the words, 1776: Liberty and Prosperity. ### Meaning The New Jersey flag displays the state's colors: blue and buff. The two women represent the goddesses of Liberty and Agriculture. The one on the left is holding the liberty cap, a soft conical cap with the top pulled forward which represents freedom and the pursuit of liberty through a confusing atmosphere. The cornucopia in the other woman's arms represents prosperity, abundance and nourishment. The plows on the shield are meant to pay tribute to the state s nickname, The Garden State. ### History In 1896, the State General Assembly met and agreed on the design that would be used as the official state flag. This is the same flag used today. The buff color used on the flag was inspired by George Washington. Washington had been headquartered in New Jersey during the Revolutionary War. As a general, he and other military officers wore buff facings on their uniforms. On October 2, 1779, Washington ordered that the uniform coats of his men be dark blue with buff facings. This was considered radical, but was done anyway. In February of the following year, the military-men in Philadelphia decided to make the uniforms standardized and have the coat facings be the same as the background color of their state flag buff. In 1965, a law was created to specify the exact shade of blue and buff that would be used on the flag. The shade of blue is, not surprisingly, called Jersey Blue. The seal which is the central motif on the flag was designed in 1777 by a man named Pierre Eugene du Simitiere.
